The Importance of Valentines Day

The Importance of Valentines Day

Now I know many are quick to point out that the 14th of February feels like a made-up holiday but there's so much interesting history behind the celebrations- so whether you're coupled up or living your best single life, here's some important things to remember today.

Valentine didn’t like this idea and went ahead and married everyone anyway

We get the name Valentines Day from Saint Valentine, who was an ancient Roman priest. Now while accounts vary, it is largely believed that 'Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers', however, Valentine didn't like this idea and went ahead and married everyone anyway. When the emperor found out, Valentine was sentenced to death. While in jail 'he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February he sent her a love letter signed [you guessed it] from your Valentine'.

So, what should we take from this?

Don't do anything illegal? Follow your heart?

Well, since Valentine's execution this story has been interpreted in different ways; some spend the day lavishing their loved ones in gifts, others pay no attention to the celebration at all.

And, in all honesty, either choice is fine but it's important to remember why Valentine died- he believed in love. What I think today is really about is showing people you love them. Now, your Valentine doesn't have to be someone you're in a relationship with, it can be a friend (#galentines) or even a family member- my aunt's birthday is the day before Valentine's Day and we've often celebrated with her on Valentine's.

Showing people you’re there and that you care for them is such an important thing to do

Simply heading out for a drink with one of your favourite people, or getting lunch with your parents is a beautiful way to spend today. Showing people you're there and that you care for them is such an important thing to do and it might be exactly what your Valentine needs- especially if they're having a rough time.

My takeaway from this is to be a little more like Saint Valentine today and every day- show people you care and stand up for what you believe in (though try not to do anything illegal).
