Nixon Defeated in NY Primary But Overall Progressives Gain
New York’s State Senate primary election was held on September 13th 2018. This primary election chose the candidates running for the New York State Senate.
Cynthia Nixon – a popular candidate amongst celebrities and students – lost her challenge in the New York Primary for Governor.
Incumbent Andrew Cuomo received 972,552 votes defeating Nixon despite her impressive feat of 511,585 votes.
However, despite the majority of the attention on Nixon’s loss, it is significant to note that progressive candidates defeated almost the entire Independent Democratic Conference (IDC). The IDC was led by Jeffrey D Klein and allied itself with Senate Republicans. It dissolved in April 2018, however, the primaries yesterday meant 6 of the 8 former IDC members lost to challengers.
Progressive wins include:
Popular congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted her support for the nominees following the electoral outcome earlier today.
Now that candidates have been chosen, elections for the NY State Assembly, State Senate, US Senate, House of Representatives, Attorney General and Governor are scheduled for November 6th.
